The "Crawled - currently not indexed" status in Google Search Console is probably the most frustrating message in SEO. Google visited your page, read it... and decided not to include it in its index. In other words: it will never appear in search results.
This is the #1 problem on SEO forums, and for good reason — it affects small blogs and million-page e-commerce sites alike.
Why Google Crawls but Doesn't Index
Google has a limited indexing budget. It can't (and won't) index every page on the web. When Googlebot crawls a page and decides not to index it, it's because it judged the page doesn't provide enough value to deserve a spot in its index.
The main causes:
1. Thin or Duplicate Content
This is the #1 reason. Google looks for unique, useful content. If your page:
- Contains fewer than 300 words of original content
- Repeats what's already found on dozens of other sites
- Is a minor variation of another page on your own site
- Was auto-generated with no added value
→ Google will crawl it but won't index it. Solution: enrich the content with original information, data, expert opinions, or concrete examples.
2. Low Domain Authority
New sites or those with few backlinks have limited "indexing credit." Google prioritizes pages from sites it considers trustworthy. If your domain is 6 months old with zero backlinks, don't expect all 500 pages to be indexed.
→ Solution: focus on a smaller number of high-quality pages rather than publishing in bulk. Build backlinks to your key pages.
3. Poor Internal Linking Architecture
A page accessible only through 4 clicks from the homepage, with no internal links pointing to it, sends a negative signal to Google: "this page isn't important."
→ Solution: ensure every important page is within 3 clicks of the homepage and receives internal links from already-indexed pages.
4. Wasted Crawl Budget
If your site has many useless pages (faceted filters, empty tag pages, internal search results, duplicate versions with/without trailing slashes), Google spends its crawl budget on these instead of your important pages.
→ Solution: clean up parasitic URLs with robots.txt, noindex, or canonicals. Use Google Search Console → Settings → Crawl Stats to see where Googlebot spends its time.
5. Orphan Pages
Pages that exist but aren't linked from any other page on your site. Google discovers them via the sitemap but considers them unimportant.
→ Solution: verify in your sitemap that every URL has at least one internal link. Tools like Screaming Frog detect orphan pages automatically.
5-Minute Diagnosis
- Google Search Console → Pages → Filter by "Crawled - currently not indexed"
- Note the patterns: is it a specific page type (product pages, tags, old articles)?
- Inspect a URL affected → check the last crawl date and whether Google mentions a problem
- Check the content: open the page — is it genuinely useful and unique?
- Check internal links: how many internal links point to this page?
Solutions That Actually Work
Improve Content (Long Term)
This is solution #1. Enrich your "not indexed" pages with: - Original, detailed content (min. 500-800 words for an article) - Data, statistics, or concrete examples - Original images with descriptive alt tags - Clear structure (H2, H3, lists)
Strengthen Internal Linking
Add links from your most crawled pages (homepage, popular articles) to non-indexed pages. This is often the fastest solution.
Force Re-submission
After improving a page:
1. Search Console → URL Inspection → Request Indexing
2. Google Indexing API → URL_UPDATED notification
3. IndexNow → instant notification to Bing/Yandex
